From June 1 to 5, the 11th Vegetation Survey and Ecosystem Biological Monitoring Training Course and the 2026 CERN Biological Monitoring Technology Training was successfully held in Xingshan County, Hubei Province. Hosted by the Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), the event was co-organized by the Biological Sub-center of the Chinese Ecosystem Research Network (CERN), the Hubei Shennongjia Forest Ecosystem National Field Observation and Research Station, and the Key Laboratory of Vegetation and Environmental Change.
This training aimed to promote the standardized implementation of vegetation surveys and ecosystem biological monitoring in China, advance the application of new technologies such as AI empowerment in biological monitoring, and cultivate high-level biological monitoring technical talents. More than 110 participants from various field stations of the CAS attended the training. Over 30 experts and scholars from the Institute of Botany, the Institute of Geographic Sciences and Natural Resources Research, the Institute of Semiconductors, the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing Normal University, and instrument companies were invited to deliver lectures and engage in in-depth discussions with the trainees.
The training officially commenced on the morning of June 2. It comprised six modules and 35 specialized reports, covering long-term monitoring data mining and applications, new AI-empowered ecosystem monitoring technologies, monitoring techniques and operation of newly purchased automated monitoring equipment, biological monitoring quality control standards and data products, the selection of biological monitoring technical experts and station exchanges, as well as on-site observation and practical training at field stations.
As an instrument and technical service provider in the field of ecological monitoring, technical experts from LICA were invited to participate. Drawing on years of frontline practical experience and technical research achievements, they delivered special technical reports. During the "Monitoring Techniques and Operation of Newly Purchased Automated Equipment" module on June 3, LICA technical engineer presented a special report on "Phenology Camera Equipment Upgrades and Maintenance," while a LICA application engineer delivered a report on "Three-Dimensional Monitoring Schemes and Practices for Ecosystem Carbon Sources and Sinks." Focusing on the practical application of monitoring equipment, they systematically shared LICA's advanced technical solutions and practical application cases in ecological monitoring.
This training established a national industry technical exchange platform, providing solid technical support for key tasks such as regional ecological protection and biodiversity conservation. Through the training, participants systematically updated their existing professional knowledge structures in ecological monitoring and enhanced their professional competence and practical instrument operation skills.
